Year 11 Trip to South Lakes Wildlife Animal Park
All Day

In June, 45 year 11 students and 7 members of staff went on a day trip to South Lakes Wild Animal Park. As part of their Science course they needed to learn about ecosystems and habitats.

There were animals from all 5 continents and students could look around and gain an insight as to which ones interacted with each other (and with the public too!) Students enjoyed being very close to the animals and could see the cheeky natures of some – the monkeys and the limas in particular.

A great day was had by all – where else could you find a field that contained giraffes, baboons, rhinos. Or be eating your meal only to be joined by a giraffe on the decking eating theirs too!

Did you know..
All Day

"Albion" is the oldest known name for the island of England, Scotland and Wales, and legend has it that it was once inhabited by giants. We think our Albion is inhabited by giants too - here's what they have been up to lately:

•The Giant Spring Clean took place in May, with students cleaning up both inside and outside our grounds - lets be proud of our community and environment!

•Y10 and 11 girls have been praised for their work in a local early years' setting, helping little ones play and learn happily.

•Albion Sport Academy boys are now representing us at Salford Reds games - even running the half time sporting activities featuring local schools! Well done boys - true Albion Giants!

•Our Albion Technology Giants have made it to the final of a nation-wide electronics and engineering competition involving Lego, computer programming and a series of complicated tasks...

CSI Visit
All Day

3 students from Year 11 were very lucky to be given a rare behind-the-scenes day at the Forensic Science Services division at Lancashire Constabulary on Thursday 13th March, accompanied by Mrs Rafferty-Clark. Following an introduction by CSI Rachel MacKenzie, the students were taken to the Fingerprints department where Gordon Frew discussed the science behind the evidence. All the students then had the opportunity to have their footwear marks taken using a magnetic wand and iron filings as well as see the database used by police forces to track footwear marks left behind at crime scenes. The final session after lunch sparked the most discussion (and some over-acting from Mrs Rafferty-Clark) as they were shown how science explains the way blood and other fluids can help crime scene investigators piece together the ‘story’ of a crime. Our thanks go to CSI MacKenzie and others from the CSI team for allowing us to visit.

World Book Day 2014
All Day

On Thursday 6th March 2014, The Albion Academy celebrated World Book Day.  It was a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) a celebration of reading.  Staff across the Academy were set the challenge to work all day in fancy dress as their favourite character from a book, with some imaginative, scary and slightly embarrassing results.

In the English department, each year group were given the chance to ‘Pick a Genre’ throughout the day, choosing their favourite genre to learn and explore with a member of the English team.  This enabled pupils to work with others not normally within their class and a new teacher.  Activities included a murder mystery lesson, sci-fi writing and creating a children’s book, including illustrations.

World Book Day became World Book Week at The Albion Academy as all pupils were set reading challenges during form time each day.  The school’s Green Room became a hub of excitement as pupils came to enter reading competitions and sought to borrow a book from the school library.  World Book Day 2014 was certainly one to remember.
